Japan’s Jun Mizutani and Mima Ito outlasted the Chinese duo, Xu Xin (the Cloudwalker) and Liu Shiwen, in a five set nail-biting comeback thriller to take home Japan’s first ever gold medal in the first ever mixed doubles table tennis event at the Olympics. En route to their gold medal victory, they only had to save seven match points against the Germans in the quarterfinals and defeat Taiwan in the semifinals—what an epic run by the Japanese pair!
